I'm deep into a top-secret editing project and a few other jobs at the moment, so no regular blogging for a while. But, before the month gets away from me again:
This month's column for FIRST OF THE MONTH magazine is now online, in which I slap the Oscar-batory film THE FIGHTER around somewhat while celebrating and examining the ring career of the actual Micky Ward. [Working titles for this article were "Reshuffled Reality and Kaiju-Goobah Battles: The Problems with THE FIGHTER" and "Like A Dodge Dynasty Crowned in Mall Hair: The Problems with THE FIGHTER." Titles are clearly not my thing.]
A little A/V to go with the article -- Ward's last four matches, which earned him almost universal honors for Fight of The Year the last three years of his ring career:
Ward-Augustus/Burton, 2001:
Gatti-Ward I, 2002:
Gatti-Ward II, 2002:
And Ward's final fight, the 2003 epic rubber match with Gatti:
*******
I'm not so sure I agree with the forming consensus that this fight from yesterday is the frontrunner for Fight of The Year 2011, but it's definitely the best action fight thus far: Flyweights Hernan "Tyson" Marquez and Luis "El Nica" Concepcion go to war for ten rounds to determine who is the undisputed world champion of the other man. Enjoy:
